Reading Your CAS: What That Monthly Statement Is Telling You

Your Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) is the one document that shows every mutual fund folio you hold, across every AMC, in a single PDF — usually emailed monthly by NSDL or CAMS/KFintech on behalf of the industry. Here is how to actually read it.

The folio number is your account ID

Each row in your CAS is grouped under a folio number — think of it as your account number with that particular AMC. If you've invested in schemes from three different fund houses, you'll see three folio groupings, each with its own number.

Units, NAV and value

For every transaction — a fresh purchase, a SIP instalment, a dividend reinvestment — the CAS shows the number of units allotted, the NAV on that date, and the amount invested. The closing balance shows your total units as of the statement date, multiplied by the latest available NAV, to arrive at current value.

Check these three things every time

What it doesn't tell you

CAS shows what you hold and its current value — it does not tell you whether a scheme still fits your goal. That's a separate, periodic conversation worth having with your distributor, ideally once or twice a year.

Risk factors: The value shown on any statement reflects NAV as of that date only and will fluctuate with market movements. Past values shown in a CAS are not indicative of future performance.
